Often the first question that is asked is “how will my Prosthesis/Orthosis be paid for?” In Victoria, there are several options available.
Victorian Artificial Limb Program
BPO is a contracted provider under the VALP system in the Barwon Region, having successfully tendered for services in 1999. This is the primary funding model for prosthetic services under the public health system in Victoria.
National Disability Insurance Scheme
The NDIS is a system of service provision for individuals with a permanent and significant disability AND are aged under 65. BPO is a registered provider of NDIS services, having been involved with the NDIS since the Barwon Regions inception as the pilot area, BPO is well placed to help you navigate your Prosthetic and Orthotics requirements for NDIS planning. Traffic Accident Commission
Worksafe
If your injury resulted from a road or workplace accident and you have an accepted claim, you may qualify for funding under these insurance schemes for your prosthetic and orthotic services.
Department of Veterans Affairs
If you hold a valid DVA card for healthcare services, DVA may be able to fund your prosthetic and orthotic needs.
Prosthetics – You may also have the option of providing your own contribution to your prosthetic componentry (ie. Upgrading to other componentry not funded under the VALP system). Your Prosthetist will discuss these options with you.
Orthotics – If you are referred as a private patient, you will have the opportunity decide your treatment pathway, your Orthotist can help guide you through this process without any commitment or pressure to proceed.
If you are a member of a private health fund, please check with your private health insurer for rebate details as per your policy
State Wide Equipment Program
SWEP is a state-wide funding option for people with a permanent disability or illness and who are unable to privately fund their Orthotic (and other assistive technology) requirements. SWEP is available for those not typically eligible for the NDIS. Your Orthotist will discuss waiting times and any co-contribution payments required if this is the most suitable option for you.
